Fireproofing Your Home Inside and Outside

Fires are mostly unpredicted incidences that can cause great damage to both commercial and residential buildings. Even if these occurrences are inevitable, you can minimise the damage they will cause by taking extra measures in protecting your home and your loved ones.

Inside your house, begin by simply keeping your space uncluttered so that you can easily find your way out even through a smoke. You should also make sure that you have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on all levels of your abode, specifically in the kitchen, the garage, and near areas and appliances that are used to expel heat or fire. Next, make sure that you purchase your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers from a reputable and reliable supplier. In addition, replace your doors and walls with fireproof materials. This is especially advisable for those with wooden homes or furnishings. Lastly, you should check that every room has at least two escape routes. Teach your family how to get out using the exits in case a fire breaks out.

As for the exteriors of your property, you can create a line of defence by planning out your landscape with plants and trees that are fire resistant. Examples of these are California Pepper, African Suman, Honey Suckle, and Dwarf Coyote Bush. This is particularly helpful for those who live in woodlands or in areas that are prone to fires. Plant grass around your property and keep them trimmed and moist. Around ten feet from your house, you can place trees or shrubs as the first wall, then continue to add more "zones" using the plants as you extend up to 100 to 150 feet from your abode.
