What is the difference between smoke alarms and smoke detectors?
Smoke alarms are self contained single or connected devices that detect smoke and then sound an alarm from an inbuilt unit. Smoke detectors are devices that only detect smoke and are used in conjunction with a separate fire alarm system. Smoke alarm integrated units are used in residential settings, while hard wired smoke detectors are common in commercial and high rise apartment buildings.
